1. Find a simple template. Don’t make your website / blog crowded with many dividers. For beginner, use 2 columns template that easy for you to manage. The simple theme is good for fast loading website / blog. It will attract readers to become your loyal reader. Template with many picture is not recommend. Other than slow loading, too many pictures make your readers not focusing on content and advertiser also not interested to advertise their product /link.
2. Widget ready. Most of CMS system has a widget to manage the system layout. Not all template support the widget so be carefully. Without widget, you must do more on programming side. Don’t waste your time.
3. Color. You must know color that suit to the topic. For example, you want to write about soccer but you choose pink for the template. Most of soccer readers is tough and the soft color is not suitable for them. Avoid black or dark background, it not good to your readers. Almost readers can’t read the black background even the text is white. They can’t concentrate on the reading because the background catches their eyes focuss.
4. Check the template. Most of the template can be review and preview using their demo. Test it and compare with others template.
5. Test on the browser. Some of template not compatible with the browser.
6. Install and test. This step takes time. Don’t rush yourself to decide on the theme. Get an opinion with expert and also try to publish using picture, sound. It is important because some of template not compatible with the media. You will frustrated if the template make your post unorganized.
